What should I expect for class?
All classes are different in content, but the structure is similar. We warm up with shadow boxing and / or jump rope. Some of the class time is dedicated to drills where students wear only gloves and shin guards. Some of the class time is dedicated to hitting Thai pads or focus mitts. Class concludes with conditioning, clinch, or technical sparring.
How should I prepare for class?
Please come to class early so you can wrap your hands and stretch prior to class start time. We keep the practice space warm. Be sure to hydrate prior to class and dress in a manner appropriate for the season.
What do I need to bring to class?
During class, students wear hand wraps, gloves, and shin guards. It is recommended that you bring water and a towel for sweat, as well. If you plan to use the shower, bring your own towel and toiletries.
What time should I get to the gym?
It is recommended that you arrive 15 minutes prior to the start time. For your first class, this additional time allows for a quick tour, assistance with hand wrapping, and help with equipment rental or fitting. As a member, this allows you time to wrap hands and stretch so you are ready to train at class start time.
Do you supply equipment?
We have a limited amount of equipment members can use until they purchase their own. Members will be required to purchase their own gloves, hand wraps, shin guards and safety equipment (groin protection, mouthguard). Elbow and knee pads are highly recommended.
We sell equipment at the gym, but do not require you purchase from us. Members have the choice to purchase from any seller / brand.
What should I wear?
Muay Thai attire includes shorts which are shorter than traditional Western culture. Muay Thai shorts are short to allow for maximum range of motion. Whether you wear those or other shorts, be sure to wear compression shorts underneath. Any comfortable workout shirt is acceptable. We do not wear shoes in class nor on the mats.
We have shorts and shirts available to purchase, but we do NOT require you to wear PCY apparel to train.
What if I have never done Muay Thai or any type of martial art?
We all started at the beginning! We accommodate all skill levels here and welcome the opportunity to teach our style to novices. Our Fundamental Class covers foundational movements and strikes. This class is designed and required for individuals starting without experience.
I don’t want to get hit. Is this a contact workout?
PCY Muay Thai has rules pertaining to contact and the Coaches oversee adherence to those rules. For the Fundamental Class, most drills are taught with contact made either to Thai pads or your partner’s gloves. There is contact during some drills but students wear training gear, including shin guards and gloves. If your partner’s technique is too strong, we encourage communication and guidance between all students.
I’ve never hit anything before. Will I hurt myself?
At PCY we promote proper technique and injuries should be minimal when employing what is taught.
Do I need to be in great shape to do the classes?
You do not need a specific level of fitness to start training. Learning Muay Thai is a committed practice that takes time and dedication. During the Fundamental Classes we encourage our students to slow down and focus on technique.
Always consult a medical professional for their opinion about any pre-existing injury or medical condition. We encourage any potential students to stop by a Fundamental Class to watch and see if Muay Thai is a viable exercise option for you. If you decide to give us a try, be sure to let a Coach know about any limitations and they will do their best to accommodate.
I have Muay Thai experience, can I jump in the advanced class?
We require everyone to start in the Fundamental Class so that our Coaches can assess your skill level and provide appropriate placement in order to challenge your practice and continue developing your skills.
What is your class capacity?
Typically, our maximum capacity is about 30 students.
What can I expect the following day(s)?
As with any exercise regimen, students should expect to be sore in accordance with their baseline physical ability. What might be unexpected, and different from non-contact exercises, is some light bruising. Bruises are typically observed on the shins and forearms and can be caused by kicking and holding pads. The bruising is minimally painful, if at all.
Do you have showers?
There are showers at our facility, but you must bring your own toiletries and towel.
What if I have an injury or medical condition?
Always consult a medical professional for their opinion about any pre-existing injuries. We encourage any potential students to stop by and watch a Fundamental Class to see if Muay Thai is a viable exercise option for you. If you decide to give us a try, be sure to let a Coach know about any limitations and they will do their best to accommodate your injury. Learning Muay Thai is a practice, your practice, so take breaks when needed.
How often should I come?
As with any new skill, more practice should mean that you will advance quickly. However, it’s important to listen to your body and know your limits. If you have an injury or feel sick, we are happy to have you back soon but in full health!
Will I lose weight?
Exercise is only one part of the journey towards better health. This practice will push your body and mind in new & challenging ways. With consistency and commitment, you will see changes!
